Thanks to improved defense and better shooting, Michigan has won two straight by a combined 37 points. Next up is a Northwestern team coming off an 80-60 loss at Purdue.
The Wildcats have just one win in 2022 but it came in East Lansing, which should put the Wolverines on alert.
“Man, they’re a good team,” Michigan assistant Saddi Washington said. “Their record does not reflect the type of team they are.” Northwestern is the 10th “unluckiest” team in the country, per kenpom.com metric that compared a team’s expected record -- based on a per-possession statistical profile -- to its actual record.
Washington added there are no off nights in the Big Ten, a conference second only to the Big 12 per the kenpom.com rankings.
Senior Pete Nance, whom Michigan was after as a high school recruit, leads Northwestern with 16.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. He can score inside stretch the floor (44 percent from 3). Boo Buie is second in the Big Ten with 5.5 assists per game. Chase Audige will shoot from anywhere.
Michigan has taken off thanks to a familiar face and a new one. Sophomore Hunter Dickinson, so often the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week last season, earned the league’s Player of the Week for his efforts against Maryland and Indiana (21 and 25 points, respectively). Caleb Houstan, who made 8-of-11 3-pointers, was the Freshman of the Week.
Michigan has won four straight in the series and last lost at home to Northwestern in 2010.
